The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya won’t leave you feeling blue — it’s one of the best anime ever made. The title character, Haruhi Suzumiya, eccentric high school student, declares that she’ll disregard the “ordinary humans” in her class — she wants to meet aliens, espers, and time travelers. Kyon, an ordinary human himself, is struck by by her amazing ability, looks, and bizarre actions, and, befriends her after encountering some initial difficulty. Unsatisfied with the clubs and organizations on campus, Suzumiya creates her own clubs, the SOS Brigade.

Things soon become really unusually as Suzumiya begins pulling in members, eventually finding five people including herself for her zany plans. Not everything is as it appears, as every member except for Kyon has a secret. Suzumiya drags her followers through murder mysteries, alternate dimensions, video games, and ordinary libraries. Most often, the SOS Brigade hangs out in their room in the arts building.

Although it’s a bit silly I found The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya genuinely inspiring — if something you want doesn’t exist, create it. This series is a must-see.
