Silent Mobius is an interesting series which can be summed up as “various mystics, magicians, and oddballs form a police squad, fight demons.” The force in question is the AMP. In this Blade-runneresqe future, the Police have been privatized, and are run by corporations of questionable morals and even more questionable competence (the economist in me wants to shred this aspect of the show, but I digress). Years ago, a failed experiment lead to a world-wide crisis, and brought unto Gaia the scourge of the Lucifer Hawk. In other words, there are flesh-eating demons about Tokyo.

The members of the AMP are all women. Rally, the director of AMP, says that is because she wants the team to give birth to a new generation when the fighting is over. I’d be offended, but every other cop in the world is apparently male. This leads to some interesting romantic interests between the members of AMP and the other forces. Whatever.

There’s a lot of focus in this series in identity, and on how we see ourselves and others. It’s very psychological in this respect. Various episodes focus on individual characters on the team, and some of the trials they go through.

One thing that greatly disappointed me was the cliff-hanger ending. Apparently, if you want to know how the story ends, you have to grab the Manga. This is a shame, because the series almost manages to wrap up everything that’s happened into a cohesive whole, and probably could have done so with just one more episode. Oh well.
