Harmagedon is a long, long movie that has not aged well. The director’s commentary includes many ironic notes that “a single mistake” could ruin the viewer’s suspension of disbelief and make the show seem unintentionally humorous. There are many mistakes, and it is very, very funny.
The movie opens with some of the laziest of lazy animation I have ever seen as a clipart-quality drawing of a airplane is imposed over scrolling clouds — at the wrong angle. A woman in black robes dances in the street and makes cryptic comments, and a princess from Transylvania is saved by the life force of the universe to battle… a giant skull that wants to destroy all life in the universe. Tacky.
Highlights of this awful, awful show include a sequence where the animals of the forest join together in search of water, the villain possesses a doctor in a bowler hat, some awkward discussion and depiction of racial issues, and New York police doing a drive-by shooting.
Harmagedon is painfully awkward to watch. Even allowing for its age, the plot is nonsensical and it lacks redeeming values; it is truly among one the “worst anime ever.”
