Galaxy Fraulein Yuna
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna is a diamond in the rough of anime. Funny, professionally produced, and sophisticated, it’s a shame that Galaxy Faulein Yuna isn’t more widely know. A slightly farcical spin on the “magic girl” theme, we’re informed by a narrator at the beginning of the show that Yuna, Savior of the Light, has already saved the entire universe at least twice, and is aided by lots and lots of others. Note that I’m including in my review Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns, as anyone who likes one will like the other, and ADV has released them both on the same DVD at any rate.
Yuna is aided, in fact, in her quest by plenty of other people, and despite the fact that they complain themselves about how hardly any of the them get enough screen time, each and every character is completely delightful. A compulvise eater, a character that’s nearly indestructable but….incredibly…slow….., a flying robot, a TV star, a princess with a really big spaceship, a self-described “bourgeois” school teacher – they’re all here. Apparently, we’re told, Yuna is just as inclined to try to make friends with her enemies as she is to kick butt. Nonetheless, this doesn’t stop the action of the show; kick butt, Yuna does, as she goes up against demons, misguided space-cops, and robots. We also see her living her normal life as superstar, going to school, and shopping at the mall; when it comes to her personality, what the series refers to as full of light, I think is full of glucose – it’s ridiculously sweet. Regardless of if Yuna fills your heart with warmth or gets it pounding with energy, it’s a filling treat.
