Changes to FanCruft Rating System Planned

    Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

In the new version of FanCruft, currently under development, a few tweaks will be made to the anime-finding quiz and ratings. Here’s what’s currently planned:

    • You’ll be able to consider the quality rating when searching for anime.
    • The following factors will be removed:
      • Fourthwall Integrity – There are only 1 or 2 anime that don’t have this. The current average for fourthwall is very high, and its variation very low.
      • Standalone – This rating is just too problematic, as cute as its name is. Many anime are enhanced by additional knowledge about the franchise, but few require it. Also, for a fair rating, the reviewer would need nearly complete knowledge of the franchise an anime belongs to.
Put more simply, I’m not sure what this factor actually is, what it’s supposed to measure, and I can’t even begin to grasp what I was thinking when I put it in the database.
    • A new category, Martial Arts & Melee Fighting, will be added
    • The factor “[Strong] Protagonist,” although not as clearly unhelpful as the Fourthwall factor, doesn’t have very much variation. It will be modified into the new factor, “Transhuman Protagonist,” which will examine how beyond-human the main characters are.

I’ve Been Busy, and I Apologize

I apologize for not updating FanCruft recently. A life filled with anime is important to me, but I have other goals as well. For details, see here. Expect anime-related updates by Monday.
